Buttons – Function and Variety

Buttons are small fastening elements primarily used in clothing to join pieces of fabric together. In addition to their practical purpose, buttons also serve a decorative role and can enhance the design of a garment.

Types of Buttons
  1. Sew-Through Buttons
The classic type with 2 or 4 holes through which the button is sewn onto the fabric.

  2. Shank Buttons
Feature a small loop or shank on the back through which the thread is passed. Often used with thicker fabrics or in more elegant clothing.

  3. Snap Fasteners (Press Studs)
Consist of two parts that are pressed together and pulled apart. Commonly found in children's clothing, bags, or sportswear.

  4. Jeans Buttons
Extra sturdy metal buttons attached with a rivet. Typical for denim pants.

  5. Decorative Buttons
Used solely for decorative purposes and do not function as fasteners. Often seen on uniforms or festive clothing.

  6. Toggle Buttons
Elongated buttons that are pushed through a loop – typical of duffle coats.

  7. Magnetic Buttons
Fasten using a magnetic mechanism. Frequently used in bags or modern designs.
